Tefta Tashko-Koço (1910 - 1947)

Lyric singer / Soprano

Born in Faiyum, Egypt on November 2, 1910. She is known as one of the most famous and well-known lyrical singers, for whom she was given the title "People's Artist", the highest and most prestigious in Albania. Her father was the prominent patriot Thanas Tashko who had emigrated to Egypt with all his family there around 1910. The family will lose him in 1915 and will return to Korca in 1921. In Korça we have the first activations of Tefta as a singer and the date 26 June 1926 is held as her first public concert. In September 1927, Tefta and her family moved to Montpellier, France, where she began her musical studies, to continue them later at the Paris Conservatoire with very promising results.

In 1930, Tefta made the first musical recordings at the record company "Pathe" -Paris, as a participant in the group of the prominent singer of iso-polyphony labe-Neço Mukon. Upon completion of her studies, Tefta returned to her homeland, where on November 26, 1935, her first concert as a professional singer in Albania was recorded, concerts which she gave in most Albanian cities. Exactly in these years, Tefta introduced in its programs along with the lyrical arias of world famous authors such as Mozart, Guno, Shubert, Verdi, Donizeti, Pergolezi, Belini, Puccini, Rosini, etc., and Albanian folk songs, as an integral part of culture Albanian folk music. There are about 89 folk songs from all cities of Albania that Tefta had in the repertoire and about 36 of them she recorded on gramophone records in the years 1930, 1937 and 1942 in Paris, France and Milan, Italy. It is already known the facts that Tefta Tashko has collected a majority of songs directly from the mouths of extinct popular musicians of our country. Such a thing is proved by the participation of Tefta together with the other prominent singer Marie Kraja in the folklore festival held in Florence, Italy on May 30, 1939 along with the prominent popular singers and musicians of those years such as Adem Mani, Xhevat Boriçi, Kole Vjerdha, Taip Kraja, Carlo Pali etc.

In the long list of folk songs sung by Tefta we would also attach folk songs elaborated by the composer Kristo Kono with poems by Lasgush Poradec such as "Kroi i fshatit tone", or "Kur me vjen burri nga stani". In addition to Tefta, we will mention two other prominent singers in the interpretation of the popular civic song: Jorgjia Filçe Truja and Maria Paluca (Kraja). In 1945, Tefta sang at the Belgrade Opera with great success the role of Mimia from Puccini's opera "Bohemia" and Rozina from Rossini's opera "Barber of Seville". In the last year of her life she has been constantly ill. Died at the age of 37 in Tirana, December 30, 1947. Tefta Tashko was married to Kristaq Koço who had a son, the Merited Artist, the conductor Eno Koco.
