Xhanfiza Keko (1928 - 2007)

Best Albanian Director for Kids Movie. "Teto Xhano" well-known Albanian director and screenwriter.

Born in the city of Gjirokastra on January 27, 1928. In 1945 she will start working as a ticket seller at the "Republika" cinema. Thanks to this work she will discover cinematography and fall in love with it. Thus, in the beginning 1950, she will start working in the Cinematographic Enterprise and together in a group of seven where are distinguished Endri Keko, Petraq Lubonja, Sokrat Musha, Jani Nano, Koço Tollko, etc., she completes a specialization in Moscow (Russia), where will also meet his life partner the famous director Endri Keko.

Upon her return to the Homeland in 1952, she will be one of the seven founders of the Kinostudio "Shqipëria e Re" where she first started working as an editor and then as a director of documentary films. Thus, her first films as a director and editor will be in 1952 with the documentaries "The Folklore Festival" and "3rd Congress of the PPSH".

After almost 20 years of experience, she directed her first film for children, being the first director in Albania. Thus in 1971 began shooting the film "Kryengritje ne pallat / Uprising in the palace" which will be given to the public in 1972. Further would continue other films such as "Mimoza llastica", "Beni ecen vete / Beni walks by himself" film which will be evaluated with the Cup of The First Albanian Film Festival, "Tomka dhe shoket e tij / Tomka and his friends", "Pas gjurmeve / After the tracks", "Nje vonese e vogel / A little delay", "Taula nti kerkon nje moter / Taulanti is looking for a sister", etc.

These films that would make her known and loved by both the audiences for kids and the adult. With these films, Xhanfize Keko will represent Albania in various International Festivals where she will be awarded with Awards and Titles, thus being the first Albanian director to have international awards. Thus: the film “Beni walks by himself " will receive the Medal of Honor at the International Film Festival for Children and Youth at Giffoni Film Festival , in Italy, in 1976 and the Pioneer Organization Award as Best Children's Film at the Belgrade Film Festival. The film "Tomka and his friends" in 1978 at the Film Festival for Children and Adolescents in Giffone, Italy wins the Special Prize. The film "Behind the Tracks" in 1979 wins the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic. The film "Kur po xhirohej nje film" in 1983 is awarded the "Medal Silver ”at the Giffoni Film Festival International Film Festival for Children and Adolescents in Italy.

But even in the Homeland she would be appreciated for her great work in children’s cinematography. Thus, Xh. Keko in addition to the Festival Cup for the film "Beni ecen vete" will be evaluated at the Third Albanian Film Festival in 1979 with the "Third Prize" for the film "Pas gjurmeve". She will be awarded the "Grand Prize of the Republic" in 1979. In 1979 she would be awarded the title "Merited Artist" and 5 years later she would be awarded the high title "People's Artist" .

Married to the famous director Endri Keko, she was the mother of two children of Teodor, the famous writer, separated prematurely from his family and Ilir. Xhanfize Keko passed away on December 22, 2007. In her honor, the Special Award of the Film Festival for Children and Youth "Giffoni-Albania" is entitled "Grand Prize" Xhanfize Keko ".
