He was born in Orikum, Vlora on December 12, 1964. Together with his family he transferred to the town of Bajram Curri, the origin of his father, since he was a teenager . In the same city he completed high school during the period 1975-1981. After he graduated as an actor at the Institute of Arts in Tirana (1981-1985). His first film as a performer would be "Autumn Reprimands" (Qortimet e vjeshtes)- 1981, in the role of Nazmi when he was still a student.
Then after this it will be almost leading roles in every film: "The red pleadge (Besa e kuqe)" - 1982 (Petrit) honored with an award; “The Militant” (Militanti), (Preka) - 1984; "The Decision" (Vendimi), (Petriti) - 1984; "Postponed Wedding" (Dasma e shtyre), (Sokoli) - 1985 etc.
Appointed lecturer at the Faculty, at the same time he completed postgraduate qualifications. During the years 1995-2000 he attended specializations and professional internships at the International School of Theater "Jacques Lecoq", Paris (France), at the School of Theater Murcia (Spain), at the US Department of State for Theater Administration and Theater Schools, as well as the organization and functioning of schools and theater companies, etc.
In 2004 he was awarded the title "Professor". After a long experience as a Head of the Section "Physical Education", as Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts (for 10 years), and as Artistic Director of the Theater of the Academy of Arts, Prof. Petrit Malaj is elected Rector of the Academy of Arts as a result of the election process attended by academic staff, non-academic staff and students of the Academy of Arts, being decreed on January 8, 2008, by the President of the Republic of Albania Mr. Bamir Topi, Rector of the only public artistic institution of higher education in Albania. Petrit Malaj is a member of the Board of the National Theater and the Municipal Council of Tirana.
For 3 years (2003-2006) he was Deputy Chairman of the Steering Council - Albanian Public Radio and Television. Prof. Petrit Malaj is a participant in many periodic European and regional activities such as theater and film festivals, conferences and seminars, masterclasses, various workshops engaged as a participant, lecturer or director of theoretical-professional sessions (Lisbon, Skopje, Pristina, Udine, Sofie, Sibiu, Badajoz, Lecce, L'Aquila, Pescara, etc.). As performers he has been awarded a number of titles which stand out: the medal "NAIM FRASHËRI" awarded by the Albanian Parliament, the Medal of the Festival at the Fifth Albanian Film Festival, the second prize for actors for the role in the film "When the doors of life open", as well as other diplomas and various evidences for the creative and scientific activity.
