The 2-nd Albanian Song Festival

This Festival took place from 22 to 25 December 1963 after the euphoria and success of the first Festival. Presented by Vera Zheji and Skifter Këlliçi. Doors opened for many known and unknown composers; for many singers, celebrities and amateurs. A peak was reached with the number of participating songs, 30 in total: 15 on the first night, 15 the second night and 15 in the finals. It took place, as in the first Festival, a fourth Night as a concert with some songs where the awards were announced.

As in the first Festival, the songs were repeated by two performers, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kristo Kote and the Rhythmic Complex conducted by Agim Krajka. If in the first Festival about half of the singers were Opera solists, in this festival the singers were almost all from well-known and amateur of soft, light music. The only one of the opera soloists was Avni Mula who as a singer-songwriter, again presented one of his songs: "Degjo o hane". This is the first time of composer Pjetër Gaci participating in the festivals, who will become so famous later and will receive many awards at these events.

Awards were given again to the singers and, without a doubt, Vaçe Zela deserved the first prize again. Thus, after this festival, awards will no longer be given to singers for the simple reason that Vaçe Zela would always receive it. In addition to the famous light music singers of the first Festival, the two already famous singers Anita Take and Paulina Nikaj also participated. But this is the 1-st and only edition where these two famous singers participate. Many amateur singers from the ranks of pupils, students, workers, etc. participated. Among them we can mention Pavlina Prifti, a student at the Art High School, who later became the famous actress Pavlina Mani. Among the amateur composers we can mention Rikard Ljarja, the famous actor, who appeared with the song "Bregdeti" and who at that time had started the Conservatory in the branch of Music and then, moved to the branch of Drama. Even this song would have the title "Riviera" but was not allowed with this foreign word. We can also mention the amateur composer, also from Shkodra, Ndok Pistulli, a special talent, who with the opening of those years, was allowed to appear at the Festival with the twist song "Kënga të ushtoje", although he came from a declassed family, but that afterwards his name was no longer allowed to be mentioned.

Also from Shkodra participates for the first and last time in festivals the composer Pjerin Ashiku, author of many songs of the '50s, known especially for the song "Lules se majit" (whose authorship continues to be "kidnapped" by others ). The song "Vasha" of this festival is heard later through the years with another title "Kukulla" sung by Justina Aliaj. The main theme of the songs, as in the first Festival, was the theme of love.

Thus, it is clear what critics expected this Festival after its end. Almost all songs were banned. Only the winning song "Flakë e borë" survived, so modern, and at the same time, with the popular Albanian sole.

This song was performed with the big orchestra by the very young singer from Shkodra Nikoleta Shoshi who, previously, had won the first children's festival held in Shkodra. But, after the Festival, the winning song by Vace Zela was broadcast more (who in fact did not sing it at the Festival) recorded with the Variety Orchestra where she worked, an orchestra that was not close to that of the Festival, where wind instruments and especially the trumpet of Gasper Çurçia, in this song, but also in the others, it is heard solo distinctly. Some singers were also criticized as too modern and were no longer allowed to appear on stage. Among them we can mention the singer from Durrës, Besnik Taraneshi, and the singer Fatbardha Bengu, who came from the ranks of ballet.
