Director, screenwriter, producer.

Born in Tirana on December 20, 1963. He has been in contact with Albanian cinemas since 1981, when he started as an actor (albeit episodically) in the TV movie "Edhe ne luftuam"; Four years later he will play another episodic role in "Hije qe mbeten pas / Shadows Left Behind".

 Son of the well-known writer Dhimiter Xhuvani. In 1986 he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Tirana, branch Dramatic Arts. From 1986 to 1990, he worked as an assistant director at the Kinostudio "Shqiperia e Re". His first film as a director comes in 1991, " Bardhe e zi / Black and White" short film. In the '90s he will also work as a director in the films " E diela e fundit / The Last Sunday" (1993); "Nje dite nga nje jete" (1994) and "Dashuria e fundit / The Last Love" (1995). With the film "Funeral Business" which is also honored with a Special Award at the XI Albanian Film Festival, he takes a qualitative step by addressing the rudeness of life, crime and social imbalance of 1997. 

 

Later Gj. Xhuvani directed the film "Slogans" (Slogans) - 2001, the film criticizes the dictatorship and extreme ideology of Albanian society. Exactly this film managed to enter and win an award in the first works section of the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival. He continues with the films "I dashur armik / Dear Enemy" (2004) and "Lindje, perendim, lindje / East West, East" (2008). In 2011 he made the TV movie with the series "Ne kerkim te kujt / In search of whom".

 

 Xhuvani with the film "The Last Sunday" (1993) received the special Jury Prize for short films at the Mediterranean Film Festival in "Bastille 93". While with the film "Last Love" has won the award for best director at the 10th Albanian Film Festival. His wife, actress Luiza Xhuvani, has been the protagonist in almost all films directed by him. He passed away on August 14, 2019, after a serious illness.
